Independent Bank in Ionia is being honored by the Michigan Bankers Association for their financial literacy efforts. They will receive their 2011 Financial Literacy Award during their region’s MBA Group Meeting May 23 at Lincoln Hills Golf Course in Ludington.
This award is given to banks making the greatest efforts to educate their community on financial literacy.
Independent Bank reached more than 20,000 individuals through their financial literacy efforts. The bank educated students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.
Bank employees also hosted an all-day event for high school seniors covering planning for the future, balancing a checking account, budgeting, borrowing money, protecting yourself from identity theft and working in the financial industry.
The lack of financial literacy contributes directly to poor credit and can place individuals at a higher risk for crimes such as identity theft.
