Advocacy

The MBA is the primary public voice of the banking industry in Michigan. We represent the industry’s interests in the state legislatures, federal legislatures, courts, regulatory arena, media and the general public. We work closely with our volunteer committee members and the general membership to pursue policies that create a positive business environment for our banks and promote strong communities in Michigan.

Foreclosure Reform Legislation Overview

The foreclosure reform package modifies the foreclosure by advertisement process in Michigan. While we continue to oppose the legislation, it is important to recognize the tremendous improvement over previous proposals that included such consequences as a flat two-year moratorium on all foreclosures and mandatory involvement in the workout discussions by a third party such as OFIR, the judicial system or a state mediator in each foreclosure transaction. Bills

The House and Senate Conference Committee reached an agreement on the foreclosure reform package. Click here to view HB 4453, HB 4454 and HB 4455.

U.S. Representatives Gary Peters and Thaddeus McCotter Nominated to Serve on House Financial Services Committee

The MBA is pleased to announce that two of Michigan’s fifteen congressional members will be serving on the House Financial Services Committee under the leadership of Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA). Congressman Gary Peters will serve as a majority member, a freshman democrat who was recently elected to represent the 9th Congressional District this past fall. Congressman Thaddeus McCotter, a republican representing Michigan’s 12th district, will continue his membership on this committee. The MBA looks forward to working with both congressmen in the upcoming legislative session. The Committee is expected to tackle economic recovery measures on banking, insurance, and real estate in the 2009-2010 session. "As a member of the financial services committee, I will be a strong voice for Michigan on efforts to revitalize our economy, help struggling homeowners and ensure the viability of our domestic auto industry," Congressman Peters said.
